Pregnancy insurance in the Czech Republic

Planning a baby or already pregnant? Learn how comprehensive health insurance, waiting periods, childbirth coverage and Slavia’s MÁMA product may apply to you.

Important: This article explains the insurer’s guidance, not a binding coverage decision. Always check the General Insurance Conditions (VPP), waiting-period rules and written approval for your particular policy before relying on pregnancy or childbirth cover.

Can foreigners get pregnancy and childbirth insurance in Czechia?

Yes, depending on the type of insurance and eligibility. Foreigners in Czechia may be covered through the public health insurance system or need commercial comprehensive health insurance for foreigners (known as KZPC). These are different systems, with different rules.

For Slavia policyholders, the key questions are whether you were already pregnant when cover began, whether the relevant waiting period has been satisfied, and whether the expected delivery takes place within the insured period.

Which situation describes you?

Planning a future pregnancy

If you are not pregnant yet, comprehensive health insurance (KZPC) may cover eligible pregnancy-related care and childbirth after the applicable waiting period. The insurer described a three-month condition, but the exact policy wording and the expected delivery date matter.

  1. Check your policy start and end dates before trying to conceive.
  2. Ask Slavia to confirm when pregnancy-related cover becomes effective and whether a previous policy period counts.
  3. Check that your expected delivery date falls within an eligible period of cover.

COVERAGE RULES

Pregnancy waiting period: what does three months mean?

In a discussion about Slavia’s comprehensive insurance, an insurer representative confirmed a three-month waiting condition for pregnancy-related coverage. She also explained that standard KZPC can remain in place when the condition is met and the expected delivery falls within the policy term.

Do not interpret this as a universal promise that every pregnancy or childbirth after three months is covered. The precise start of the waiting period, the timing of conception, exclusions and treatment eligibility must be checked against your own VPP and policy documents. The discussion did not establish a separate eight-month childbirth rule.

Renewing your policy? If you already have Slavia KZPC, ask the insurer whether the period insured under your previous contract will be recognised when the new contract starts immediately after it. Continuity should be confirmed for the actual policies, not assumed.

Standard KZPC vs. Slavia MÁMA pregnancy cover

QuestionStandard KZPCMÁMA
Who is it for?Eligible foreigners needing comprehensive coverPregnancy situations requiring a separately assessed MÁMA contract
Pregnancy careMay be covered after applicable waiting conditionsStandard eligible prenatal care under approved contract terms
ChildbirthMay be covered when eligibility and policy dates allowChildbirth under the approved maternity policy

According to the insurer representative, MÁMA is not an automatic add-on required for every pregnant policyholder. In some situations the existing comprehensive contract is sufficient. Where MÁMA is needed, the insurer described a medical questionnaire completed with the doctor and submitted for assessment before approval. Do not cancel your existing contract until the replacement arrangement is confirmed.

MEDICAL CARE

Which pregnancy and childbirth costs may be covered?

The insurer representative described standard eligible prenatal examinations, childbirth and postpartum care for the mother. She cautioned that optional childbirth packages offered by private clinics, non-medical extras and upgrades should not be assumed to be covered.

Ask the insurer to confirm any limits, exclusions, provider-network requirements and approvals for specialist appointments, tests, pregnancy complications, delivery method and hospital care. Not every service marketed as a pregnancy package is an insured medical benefit.

AFTER BIRTH

Does pregnancy insurance cover the newborn?

Insurance for the mother and insurance for the baby are separate questions. In the Slavia discussion, the MÁMA product was described as covering the mother's maternity care, not automatically the baby's hospital stay or treatment after birth.

A child born in Czechia may qualify for public health insurance depending on the parents' residence and the child's legal status. Do not assume public cover starts automatically in every situation: check registration and any reporting deadlines with a Czech public insurer.

Five things to check before choosing pregnancy insurance

  2. What are the start and end dates of your current insurance?
  3. Has Slavia confirmed your applicable waiting period and any recognition of previous cover?
  4. Will your expected delivery date fall within the policy period, and is childbirth included?
  5. How will your newborn be insured from birth?

Keep any insurer confirmation in writing, especially if you are changing policies during pregnancy.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Pregnancy insurance FAQs

Does comprehensive health insurance (KZPC) cover pregnancy and childbirth?

According to an explanation provided by a Slavia insurance representative, standard KZPC can cover eligible prenatal care and childbirth when the applicable three-month waiting condition is met and delivery falls within the policy period. Exact coverage depends on the policy wording and individual circumstances.

What if I am already pregnant when applying?

Do not assume that a new standard KZPC contract will cover an existing pregnancy. Slavia may require its MÁMA maternity product and medical underwriting. Ask for written confirmation before changing or purchasing cover.

Do I need MÁMA insurance from the sixth month of pregnancy?

Not automatically. In the insurer discussion, MÁMA was described as a possible solution when standard coverage conditions are not met or a policy ends before childbirth. The exact timing and eligibility must be confirmed with Slavia.

Does MÁMA also insure my newborn baby?

No, not automatically. The insurer representative explained that MÁMA relates to the mother’s prenatal care, childbirth and postpartum care. The baby’s insurance or public-system eligibility must be arranged separately.

What happens if my insurance expires before I give birth?

Contact Slavia before the policy expires. The insurer described cases in which a separate MÁMA policy may be needed. Do not assume a new standard contract will automatically preserve childbirth coverage.

Are private clinic childbirth packages covered?

The insurer representative distinguished standard medically covered services from optional private clinic packages, gifts and upgrades, which should not be assumed to be reimbursed.

NEXT STEPS

Find the right cover before your next step

If you are planning a pregnancy, review the dates and terms of your comprehensive insurance before applying. If you are already pregnant, ask about eligibility for maternity-specific cover and medical assessment first.

Our general price calculator is not a quotation for MÁMA maternity insurance. The insurer must confirm any MÁMA-specific premium and acceptance.
