Public vs. commercial health insurance
Which insurance system might apply to you in Czechia?

Before you act: This guide is informational. Official immigration rules, insurer terms and coverage eligibility may change. Verify current details with the relevant Czech authority and the insurer.
GUIDE 1 / 3
Public health insurance
- Public health insurance covers groups specified by Czech law, including many employees and certain residents.
- EU/EEA/Swiss visitors may have access through EHIC or other cross-border entitlements; verify registration and exact rules.
- Working in Czechia does not always mean you need to buy private insurance.
GUIDE 2 / 3
Commercial insurance for foreigners
- Private/commercial products are relevant to many visitors and long-term residents who are not eligible for Czech public insurance.
- Review benefit limits, contracted providers, assistance procedures, territorial validity and exclusions.
- Only an insurer can confirm the exact cover offered by a particular product.
GUIDE 3 / 3
Check before changing systems
- Starting employment, gaining residence rights or changes affecting a child can alter your insurance status.
- Confirm the date any public cover begins before cancelling existing insurance.
- Ask the authority, employer or public insurer when unclear.
KZPC or NZPC: what is the difference?
Choose a situation to see how comprehensive and emergency-only private health insurance generally differ. This is guidance, not a coverage decision.
Comprehensive health insurance
Comprehensive insurance generally includes medically necessary care within the policy scope, which may include non-emergency treatment.
Necessary & urgent healthcare
Emergency-only cover normally does not include ordinary planned consultations or routine care.
Even KZPC may exclude preventive services, pre-existing conditions or certain planned treatment. Check the full terms.

Practical action guide
Before choosing public or private insurance
Your eligibility may change when you start work, obtain permanent residence, or have a child with a particular residence status.
Progress is saved on this device only. It is not sent to SHC or the insurer.
Important: This is a decision checklist, not an eligibility determination. Confirm your status with the relevant public insurer, employer or competent authority.
