Before you act: This guide is informational. Official immigration rules, insurer terms and coverage eligibility may change. Verify current details with the relevant Czech authority and the insurer.

GUIDE 1 / 5

What changed — and what applies in 2026?

  • Since 20 September 2023, comprehensive medical insurance for foreigners has not been restricted to a single provider. Applicants can obtain the required policy from an insurer authorised to offer this cover in the Czech Republic.
  • The Czech Ministry of the Interior specifies a minimum insured limit of EUR 400,000 for each insured event, without the insured person sharing treatment costs, for relevant insurance submitted with long-term visa and residence applications.
  • Do not rely on older information mentioning a EUR 60,000 minimum or an exclusive insurer. Check the latest Ministry of the Interior rules for your individual status.

GUIDE 2 / 5

Applying abroad for a long-term visa or residence permit

  • Depending on the application, you can submit comprehensive health insurance covering your entire stay, or proof of necessary and urgent care for the first 90 days together with comprehensive cover for the remaining period.
  • Insurance documents are generally provided before the granted visa is collected at the Czech diplomatic mission. The embassy may request proof of insurance payment.
  • Special rules and exemptions apply, including some applicants entitled to public insurance or insured by another accepted means. Confirm the requirements in the official instructions for your visa category.

GUIDE 3 / 5

Applying or extending your stay inside Czechia

  • When applying for or extending a qualifying long-term visa or residence permit from within Czechia, the submitted insurance certificate normally needs to show comprehensive health care for the applicable period.
  • Consider your eligibility for Czech public health insurance through employment, residence status or other applicable arrangements before purchasing private cover.
  • Children under 18 who obtain certain Czech long-term residence permits enter public health insurance. For a child holding only a long-term visa, the position can differ; do not automatically purchase the same commercial policy for every family member.

GUIDE 4 / 5

Checklist: verify the actual insurance policy

  • Check the policyholder and insured person's name, coverage start and end dates, territory and scope of treatment.
  • Confirm that the applicable policy satisfies the EUR 400,000 per insured event minimum without cost sharing and that you receive a certificate, contract and any requested proof of payment.
  • Compare exclusions, chronic conditions, pregnancy provisions and claims assistance rather than judging by price alone. Only the final insurer documents determine the benefits.

Next steps for students, workers and families

  • University students: verify your visa route, dates of study and eligibility for the University Student insurance category in the official application.
  • Employees: first check whether your Czech employment already makes you eligible for public health insurance; commercial cover may be needed for a waiting or entry period.
  • Families: assess each adult and child individually, especially when a minor has or will receive a long-term residence permit.
