Czech Visa Taking Longer Than 60 Days? Here’s What You Can Do

A practical guide for international students and researchers waiting for a Czech visa or residence permit decision — based on official Ministry of the Interior guidance.

Visa & Residence · Slavia Health Care Expat Guide

First, a key distinction: The standard 60-day processing period applies to Czech long-term visas for study, teaching and scientific research and to qualifying long-term residence permits for study or research. Other visa and residence categories can have different limits. Statutory periods may stop running when proceedings are suspended or another legal ground applies.

01 / THE RULES

How long should a Czech visa decision take?

Application categoryStandard time limit
Long-term visa — study, teaching or scientific research60 days
Long-term residence permit — study60 days
Long-term residence permit — scientific research60 days
Other ordinary long-term visas90–120 days, depending on legal category

These are statutory administrative time limits, not guarantees of a decision on an exact calendar date. See the Ministry’s processing-period table for other categories and calculation rules.

02 / NEXT STEPS

What to do when your decision is delayed

  • 1. Confirm which application you submittedA long-term visa and a long-term residence permit are different procedures. Check the purpose and category on your application receipt, and do not assume the same deadline applies to every type of stay.
  • 2. Check your application onlineUse your application reference number on the official Ministry of the Interior status page. “Being processed” means the case has not yet been decided; it does not reveal exactly what the authority is checking.
  • 3. Check whether the statutory clock has been pausedA request for additional documents, correction of errors or another lawful ground can suspend the processing period. Also check official rules for how deadlines are calculated. Counting 60 calendar days from submission is not enough to prove a deadline has expired.
  • 4. Ask for a written updateContact the competent authority and ask whether the proceedings are suspended, whether any documents are missing and what processing period applies. Keep your submission confirmation and copies of correspondence. The Ministry provides an official procedure for requesting information about the state of proceedings.
  • 5. Consider formal protection against inactivity if applicableFor residence permit proceedings where the applicable legal deadline has actually elapsed, the official Ministry guide explains a request for protection against inactivity under Section 80 of the Administrative Procedure Code. It is considered by a superior authority; it does not guarantee approval. Do not assume this exact remedy applies identically to every long-term visa procedure.

03 / SAMPLE MESSAGE

How to request a written status update

Use the Ministry’s official instructions for the correct submission channel. You can adapt this English-language example to describe your situation; formal submissions may have Czech language, identity or signature requirements.

Subject: Request for information on pending residence application — [reference number]

Dear Sir or Madam,

I submitted my application for [exact visa or residence category] at [embassy or office] on [date]. My reference number is [number]. The online portal still shows “Being processed”.

Could you please confirm the current status of the proceedings, whether the statutory processing period has been suspended and whether any additional action or documents are required from me?

Thank you for your assistance.
Kind regards,
[Full name]

If you need a formal remedy against inactivity rather than a routine update, follow the Ministry’s separate procedure ; this sample email does not itself constitute that formal request.

04 / AFTER APPROVAL

When do you need health insurance?

For many approved applications made abroad, proof of qualifying medical insurance is shown before the visa is issued or collected, rather than necessarily at the initial application appointment. Requirements vary by type of visa or residence, and some applicants are exempt or eligible for public health insurance.

Researchers: your route into Czech public health insurance may differ from a student’s; check eligibility and any gap before public cover starts. Students: confirm the policy type and period specified for your visa. This article focuses on delayed immigration decisions, not on choosing a particular insurance product.

05 / COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can my Czech visa be approved on day 59 or 60?

Yes, a decision may arrive towards the end of the applicable period. The online status does not predict the decision date. Your individual deadline may also be affected by a lawful suspension.

Why was someone who applied after me approved first?

Applications are assessed individually and may involve different documents, checks, interruptions and categories. Other applicants’ reference numbers do not establish your own processing deadline or outcome.

Does “Being processed” mean my application will be rejected?

No. It means the proceeding has not yet reached a displayed final result. Use the official status portal and any formal notices you receive to understand your case.

Does waiting more than 60 days automatically mean the authority broke the law?

No. The statutory time limit can be suspended or otherwise affected by the law. Confirm the application category, the starting date and any interruption before considering a formal remedy.

Should I buy commercial health insurance while waiting?

First check when the embassy requires the insurance certificate and whether you qualify for public coverage or another exemption. Some researchers may enter Czech public health insurance after receiving their residence card. Avoid buying longer or unsuitable private cover without checking your status.
